Qur'an page on peach-coloured paper

Object of the Week - 21 Jan 2021

This beautiful page is from a luxurious 13th century Qur’an, probably made for a Royal or noble patron in the Islamic Kingdom of Granada in Spain. Though parchment was the standard material for Qur’an manuscripts of this period, this one is written on vibrant peach-coloured paper. It is testament to the technological prowess of the medieval Islamic world and, like the palace of the Alhambra, a vestige of its richness and splendour before the Christian conquest.
