Following the rise of the printed book in the 16th century, the legacy of medieval manuscript illumination stayed alive in the form of the portrait miniature. This enigmatic portrait miniature is by Nicholas Hilliard, the undisputed doyen of court portraiture who worked under Elizabeth I and James I in a career lasting more than four decades.
